{"id":307,"date":"2016-03-17T13:57:01","date_gmt":"2016-03-17T13:57:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/?p=307"},"modified":"2016-03-24T13:31:41","modified_gmt":"2016-03-24T13:31:41","slug":"vsan-in-the-home-lab-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/index.php\/2016\/03\/17\/vsan-in-the-home-lab-part-2","title":{"rendered":"VSAN in the Home Lab \u2013 Part 2 (Benchmarks)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>***EDIT***<\/p>\n<p>The OCD\u00a0in me couldn&#8217;t go through this blog post with an &#8216;old&#8217; version of VSAN. \u00a0VMware just released VSAN 2.0 with vSphere 6 update 2. \u00a0My vCenter and the ESXI hosts have now been updated. \u00a0 For a nice blog on what&#8217;s new, you can read this &#8211; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yellow-bricks.com\/2016\/02\/10\/whats-new-for-virtual-san-6-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.yellow-bricks.com\/2016\/02\/10\/whats-new-for-virtual-san-6-2\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>***********<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/?p=307&amp;preview=true\" target=\"_blank\">Part 1<\/a> of this series I went through Enabling and Configuring VSAN. \u00a0Now that we have an operational Datastore, we need to figure out if it&#8217;s actually usable. \u00a0Don&#8217;t get me wrong, I&#8217;m sure it&#8217;s functional and operational, but don&#8217;t we want to see how this bad boy performs?\u00a0 Just to refresh your memory we are running 1x HDD and 1xSSD on each host in a 3x host configuration. \u00a0Obviously if performance is your main goal, you should make the disk group\u00a0100% SSD based.<\/p>\n<p>The past couple years I&#8217;ve used a few 3rd party tools to diagnose\/benchmark performance. \u00a0For this blog post I&#8217;ll be taking a look at Iometer, VSAN Performance\u00a0stats (integrated with VSAN), and CrystalDiskMark. \u00a0I&#8217;m all ears if anyone has any suggestions on additional programs (free) or specific tweaks with the current tools for better real world scenarios. \u00a0I do understand that we could tweak and try different tests for the next year. \u00a0So hopefully these couple of tests provide us a simple &#8216;overview&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One thing to note: The performance numbers in my lab may be different than the performance numbers in your lab\/environment. \u00a0This is due to differences in hardware, disk type, storage, etc&#8230; \u00a0So, what I&#8217;m trying to say is, don&#8217;t shoot the messenger.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Test Scenario:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows 8.1 Virtual Machine\n<ul>\n<li>patched<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>2vCPU<\/li>\n<li>8GB Memory<\/li>\n<li>C:\\ on VSAN Datastore<\/li>\n<li>E:\\ on VSAN Datastore<\/li>\n<li>F:\\ on FreeNAS Datastore<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ve decided to run my tests side by side my FreeNAS box. \u00a0This is my primary storage in my HomeLab.<\/p>\n<p>FreeNAS Host:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HP Proliant DL160 G6<\/li>\n<li>24GB Memory<\/li>\n<li>16vCPU w\/ Hyperthreading<\/li>\n<li>1Gbps Network<\/li>\n<li>4x Western Digital black 3.5 7200 RPM 1TB Sata Drives (Raid 10)<\/li>\n<li>FreeNAS is my current storage location that houses around 20 running Virtual Machines. \u00a0I don&#8217;t have any excessive performance VMs\/Jobs running at the moment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with Iometer. A proven diagnosing\/benchmarking tool since early 2000&#8217;s. \u00a0For the past couple year&#8217;s I&#8217;ve been using the Atlantis article (<a href=\"https:\/\/community.atlantiscomputing.com\/blog\/Atlantis\/August-2013\/How-to-use-Iometer-to-Simulate-a-Desktop-Workload.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/community.atlantiscomputing.com\/blog\/Atlantis\/August-2013\/How-to-use-Iometer-to-Simulate-a-Desktop-Workload.aspx<\/a>) to configure Iometer parameters that mirror data reads\/writes to a VDI\/Xenapp environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iometer Results:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-Iometer-VSAN2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-315\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-315\" src=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-Iometer-VSAN2.jpg\" alt=\"VSAN-Iometer-VSAN2\" width=\"490\" height=\"301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-Iometer-VSAN2.jpg 1351w, https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-Iometer-VSAN2-340x210.jpg 340w, https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-Iometer-VSAN2-570x350.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-Iometer-FreeNAS.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-316\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-316\" src=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-Iometer-FreeNAS.jpg\" alt=\"VSAN-Iometer-FreeNAS\" width=\"495\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>CrystalDiskMark Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seq \u2013 long, sequential operations. For SQL Server, this is somewhat akin to doing backups or doing table scans of perfectly defragmented data, like a data warehouse.<\/li>\n<li>512K \u2013 random large operations one at a time.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t really match up to how SQL Server works.<\/li>\n<li>4K \u2013 random tiny operations one at a time.\u00a0 This is somewhat akin to a lightly loaded OLTP server.<\/li>\n<li>4K QD32T1 \u2013 (Queue Depth 32 and 1 thread) random tiny operations, but many done at a time.\u00a0 This is somewhat akin to an active OLTP server.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-CrystalDiskMark-VSAN.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-321\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-321\" src=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-CrystalDiskMark-VSAN.jpg\" alt=\"VSAN-CrystalDiskMark-VSAN\" width=\"366\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-CrystalDiskMark-FreeNAS2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-320\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-320\" src=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-CrystalDiskMark-FreeNAS2.jpg\" alt=\"VSAN-CrystalDiskMark-FreeNAS2\" width=\"365\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>VSAN Storage Performance Test (Stress Test &#8211; 5 Min Duration &#8211; Default VM Storage Policy):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-Integrated-Performance-StressTest.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-324\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-324\" src=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-Integrated-Performance-StressTest.jpg\" alt=\"VSAN-Integrated Performance-StressTest\" width=\"948\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>VSAN Storage Performance Test (Low Stress Test &#8211; 5 Min Duration &#8211; Default VM Storage Policy):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-Integrated-Performance-LowStressTest.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-325\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-325\" src=\"https:\/\/verticalagetechnologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/VSAN-Integrated-Performance-LowStressTest.jpg\" alt=\"VSAN-Integrated Performance-LowStressTest\" width=\"938\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>VSAN 6.2 is a great product. \u00a0It&#8217;s getting better and more feature rich by the release. \u00a0This release alone added so much more health\/performance\/diagnostic information than ever before. \u00a0Also, Deduplication and Compression, which were disabled in my tests, shipped as well. \u00a0I&#8217;m looking forward to the progression of this software and have no doubt VMware will continue improving it. \u00a0As for my opinion on using VSAN as my preferred HomeLab storage solution?
